gluehwein

I've received many requests for this recipe around Christmas time, so I think I'll post it. In Germany we were warmed by drinking Gluehwein as we browsed the Kristkindlmarkt, the traditional German outdoor Christmas market. After I'd lived in the States for a while, I found this recipe and though it's not true Gluehwein, it warms me through the Christmas season as I recall fondly Christmases in Germany. Hot Mulled Wine 4 c. sugar (I think this is too sweet & have used 3 c. and 2 c.) 1 T. ground cinnamon or 6 medium cinnamon sticks 1 t. ground cloves or whole cloves 2 c. boiling water 3 medium oranges, thinly sliced 1 medium lemon, thinly sliced 1 gallon dry red wine In 8 quart saucepot, combine sugar, cinnamon, cloves and water. Add orange and lemon slices to saucepot. Over high heat, heat to boiling; boil 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium; add wine; heat till piping hot but not boiling, stirring occasionally. Ladle into cups. - from the Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook

  1. Thanks, Anne! I was one who called you for the recipe because when you made this the first time, I was amazed--and so glad--that it tasted so authetic. Yes, it's now become a Must Make for Christmas and the winter season.
